Open Play (Sunday Mornings)
Open Play is an SMTC tradition: friendly, competitive doubles for members.
When & where
- Christine Emerson Reed Park (Wilshire Blvd. at Lincoln Blvd.)
- 9:00 AM-2:00 PM
How it works
- We have a few courts reserved and a sign-up sheet.
- Add your name to the list. When a court opens, the next four players go on.
- Court #1 is the challenge court: the winning team stays on for one more match (max) and plays the next team in line.
- Challenge court requires signing up with a partner.
- Challenge Court etiquette: We encourage signing up only if you believe you can compete with the teams currently on court and have a chance to win.
This is the SMTC tradition of providing doubles tennis for club members in a friendly and competitive atmosphere. All you have to do is show up at Christine Emerson Reed Park, Wilshire Blvd. at Lincoln Blvd. between 9 am and 2 pm. We have a few courts available and a sign up sheet. You add your name and the top four play when a court becomes available. Court #1 is the challenge court, which means that a winning team automatically keeps the court for one more match with the next team in line. This court requires you to sign up with a partner.
If it’s your first time, don’t worry—regulars at Sunday Open Play are happy to help new members with the flow and the rules.
Live Ball
We offer Live Ball sessions, currently twice per week.
Schedule
- Sundays, 11:30 AM–1:00 PM (90 minutes)
- Wednesdays, 7:00–8:30 PM (90 minutes) — restricted by level of play to keep drills and point-play competitive and fun for everyone
We also offer occasional Friday Night Action Ball sessions based on demand.

- Members: $25 (priority sign-up)
- Non-members: $35

Tournaments
We host a tournament about every couple of months, ranging from relaxed social events to more competitive play.
Social tournaments
These are designed to be welcoming and fun, with lots of mixing and a great community vibe. Examples include:
- Hello Tournament (Jan/Feb)
- Spring Social (Mar/Apr)
- Turkey Shoot (Nov)
Competitive tournaments
These are for players looking for more structured competition. Some events may require an official rating (or a comparable level assessment). Example:

Trips & social events
SMTC has traditionally organized happy hour socials, inter-club tournaments and low-cost weekend trips—often to tennis resorts within a two-hour drive. Over the years, trips have ranged as far as Hawaii, including a memorable luau (and yes—members even met the King of Hawaii). Costs have risen and demand has fallen, so we haven’t hosted inter-club events or trips in the last few years—but membership is growing, and we hope to bring them back.
